An American actor, born in New York City, USA, the son of Russian and Romanian immigrants. His mother was an insurance agent, and his father was a hat maker. In the 1930s, he spent summers at the Pine Brook Country Club in Connecticut. He also appeared on Broadway in the play Coriolanus in 1938. He began his stage training in the 1930s, studying under Stella Adler. He joined the U.S. Army Air Forces in World War II and had a small role in the 1948 crime film The Naked City. He began working on stage, mainly in New York. Director John broke the Hollywood blacklist after casting him in the lead role in Seconds (1966). He went on to various films, including Serpico (1973) and You've Got Mail (1998).
