He also won many other awards, such as the Silver Lion for Best Director, the International Critics Award (FIPRESCI) at the 2002 Venice Film Festival, and the Best Screenplay Award at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. He was nominated for the Golden Lion and the Palme d'Or Awards. He served as Minister of Culture and Tourism in South Korea from 2003 to 2004.
