An Irish actor, he was born in Dublin, Ireland. From a young age, he became interested in theater while attending the Irish Christian Brothers O'Connell School on North Richmond Street in Dublin. He started his own company and pursued studies to become an eye doctor. He started his career at the Irish theater on Hardwick Street and also took part in amateur theatrical plays. After years of performing in several plays, he teamed up with actor John McDonagh to participate in a theatrical performance called Dublin To-Night in 1924. He made the decision to focus entirely on theater activity in 1927 and took part in numerous productions.
