A British actor and singer, born in Hackney, London, England, United Kingdom. He was nominated for an Oscar for Best Music, Scoring Adaptation and Original Song Score for Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory in 1972 and won the Writers' Guild of Great Britain Award for Best British Original Screenplay in 1970. He married 3 wives and had 5 children. He is known for Sweet November (1968), Doctor Dolittle (1967), and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971). He was born to George Kirby, a clerk at a shipping company, and Frances Grace. His parents separated when he was young, and he lived with his stepfather, Ronald Gardner, who used to work as a driver. He fell in love with acting when he was young when he saw a child acting in an advertisement. He joined the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts at the age of 14, and in 1948, he played a major role in the movie Oliver Twist (1948). He continued his cinematic work until he was called up in the early fifties to serve in the army, and after his discharge, he continued his cinematic activity in various roles and participated in television shows as a child actor and musician. He began to be known as a singer and composer, and in the late fifties, he became famous for the song "Idol on Parade", which he sang in a movie of the same title in 1959. He began to present many innovative musical works in the United Kingdom. From 1959 to 1962, he moved on to musical plays, where he presented many successful works, and in 1966, he presented a theatrical show entitled Stop the World: I Want to Get Off (1966), which had long runs in London and on Broadway and was adapted into a movie. He died in Jensen Beach, Florida, USA on April 14, 1999 of renal cancer.
