A French philosopher and writer, born in Langres, France. After completing his studies at the Jesuit College in Langres, he was appointed a professor of arts and went on to study theology at the Sorbonne. He was the editor-in-chief, oversaw the development of the Encyclopedia of...Read more Arts, Sciences, and Crafts, and edited other chapters. He led the Enlightenment movement as well. His first book, "Philosophical Thoughts," was published in 1746. He also authored several other works, including "The Nun" and "Jacques the Fatalist." He was imprisoned in the Château de Vincennes for his writings. He died on July 31, 1784, in Paris.
