He received his education at Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard University, where he earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree in theater. In 1953, he wrote the play "Tea and Sympathy," which became a movie in 1956. He also wrote many other works, such as The Patricia Neal Story (1981) and American Playhouse (1988).
