A British actor, born in Plymouth, United Kingdom. He is best known for his many roles in Shakespeare's plays, in addition to his participation in more than 70 films and television works. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1979 and knighted in 1997 for his distinguished contributions in the field of drama. Despite the fame he achieved through his theatrical works, audiences knew him for his role in the comedy series Never the Twain, and the police drama Judge John Deed. He made his cinematic debut in 1953 in the movie The Cruel Sea, which launched his long film career. He died on September 12, 2014 in Romney Marsh, New Romney, United Kingdom at the age of 90 after a long battle with prostate cancer.
