Japanese animator and director, born on March 31, 1950 in Gosen, Niigata, Japan. He studied at Tokyo College of Design, majoring in animation. His animated works include: Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, and Whisper of the Heart. He died on January 21, 1998 in Tokyo, Japan.
