A Cuban-born American actor, born in Havana, Cuba, to American parents, as Millard Fillmore Mitchell. In 1953, he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor for My Six Convicts (1952). He married actress Margaret Gould (1942-1953) and had two daughters, Mary Ellis and Margaret. His wife remained with him until his death in 1953. His most notable works include Singin' in the Rain (1952), Twelve O'Clock High (1949), A Foreign Affair (1948), and The Gunfighter (1950). Millard Mitchell was a famous New York theater and radio actor in the 1930s. As for his cinematic career, he started in 1931. His real beginning was in Hollywood in 1942 when he presented Mr. and Mrs. North (1942). After World War II, he worked in many films and played the roles of strong sarcastic characters. From 1942 to 1953, he was a successful supporting actor, presented 30 films, and participated in two TV series. Although he was never trained in singing, he played a good singing role in Singin' in the Rain (1952). He co-starred in The Naked Spur (1953) with James Stewart, Janet Leigh, and Robert Ryan. Because of his excessive smoking, lung cancer ended his life while he was still in his fifties. He died in Santa Monica, California, USA on October 13, 1953 of lung cancer.
