A German-American screenwriter, director, novelist, and science fiction writer. He was born in Germany and worked as an engineer and newspaper reporter before entering the literary and film fields. Following the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis in Germany, he first relocated to England before settling in Hollywood. He worked with Universal Pictures and helped write the screenplays for several films, most notably F.P.1 antwortet nicht (1932), The Wolf Man (1941), Son of Dracula (1943), and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943).
