American actress born on 15 February 1899, in Litchfield, Minnesota. She started her acting career in theater and began acting in film in 1936. In 1937, she won the very first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Anthony Adverse. She also appeared in The Spider Woman (1943), and The Return of a Man Called Horse (1976). She passed away on August 14, 1985, at age 86.
