Danish writer, born in Fredericia in central Denmark. He left Copenhagen, where he had been studying engineering, to pursue journalism. He made the decision to concentrate on writing when he was twenty years old. He addressed aspects of Danish society in his main trilogy, The Enchanted Land (1891–1895), which he composed under the influence of social and theological reformer Bishop Ngolai Grundtvig. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1917 with Carl Gjellerup and died in Charlotte, Denmark.
