After graduating, he worked as a teacher before moving on to managing several movie theaters. In 1982, he directed his first film, Lettres d'amour en Somali (1982), and later published a novel based on the same film with the same title. In 1999, he served as the general commissioner of the Moroccan Year in France. Sarkozy appointed him head of the Académie de France in Rome before appointing him Minister of Culture and Communication. At the age of 13, he appeared in the film Fortunat (1960).
