American actor, born in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He graduated from Austin High School in Texas in 1962, then earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1966, majoring in psychology. He worked for two years in the US Peace Corps, where he taught in Borneo, Indonesia. He sang with many bands, most notably the Armadillos. He also appeared on the comedy program Saturday Night Live (1976) and on The Muppet Show. He ran for Texas governor elections. He won many awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1986 and the Grammy Award for Best Album in 1978.
