American actor born in Chicago, Illinois on 31 January 1921. His marriage to Shirley Temple jump-started his film career, as he made his acting debut with her in John Ford's Fort Apache (1948). He's known for The Mole People (1956), Sands of Iwo Jima (1949), and Big Jake (1971). He passed away on 7 April 2002 in Burbank, California, at age 81.
