A Swedish actress and director, born in Västerås, Västmanlands Län, Sweden, as Mai Elizabeth Zetterling. She won a BAFTA Television Award in 1973 and an LNED Award in 1986. She appeared in film and television productions spanning six decades, from the 1940s until the 1990s. She was active in British television in the 1950s and 1960s. Mai was the daughter of a working-class family, and as a child, she traveled briefly to Australia with her mother and stepfather. She left school when she was 13 and then worked in a store as an assistant. She trained in acting at the National Theater in Stockholm when she was a teenager. She made her film debut in Lasse-Maja (1941). She had a great influence on the film written by Ingmar Bergman, Torment (1944). She had television activity, which she began in the mid-fifties, and her most prominent series was Jackanory (1966). She began directing political documentaries and short films. She was influenced by writer and director Ingmar Bergman. Her first feature film was Loving Couples (1964), which was banned in several countries. Near the end of her life, she returned to film acting, and her last work was Morfars resa (1993). She died in London, England, United Kingdom on March 17, 1994, from cancer.
