He graduated from the university in 1916 and represented the United States in 1920 at the Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium, winning the silver medal. He worked on Broadway, and among his early films was The Laughing Lady (1929). He used to play athletic roles. He wrote the script for Deception (1932). He is known for Horse Feathers (1932), At the Circus (1939), and the MGM Dr. Kildare franchise. He died in San Diego, California of a heart attack.
