An American actress who was born in Baltimore, Maryland to a German father who was a physician and an American mother of German origins. She had a successful career in the theater since 1912 until the end of the twenties, and she often performed comedic roles. She continued her theatrical work despite her cinematic work and appeared in many productions of her husband, theatrical director Myron Fagan. She began her cinematic career when sound entered the film industry, and she presented her first film, The Great Power (1929). She contracted with the Fox Company and presented the movie Doctors Wives (1931) and other movies. She is known for After Tomorrow (1932), The Thin Man (1934), Babbitt (1934), and Stepping Sisters (1932). She appeared in four films nominated for the Oscar. Her movie, The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) won an Oscar.
