He received the Padma Shri award in 1974 and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. He was the Sangeet Natak Akademi's chairman (1988–1993), as well as the Film and Television Institute of India's director (1974–1975). In addition to teaching at the University of Chicago, he was a Fulbright playwright-in-residence from 1987 to 1988. Also, he served as director of the Nehru Centre and as Minister of Culture, in the Indian High Commission, London (2000–2003). Among his most important works is Nagamandala.
