An American writer and producer, born in 1950 and raised on Upper East Side, Manhattan, where she attended Hunter College High School, graduating in 1990. She taught SATs after college, attended a theatre program, and wrote in her spare time. She moved to L.A. after getting several plays produced. She is known for The Handmaid's Tale (2017), Eli Stone (2008-2009), and Hart of Dixie (2011-2015). In 2017, Gerstein shared a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series for The Handmaid's Tale (2017).
