He married actress Dimple Kapadia in 1973, with whom he had two daughters: the eldest Twinkle Kanna, the wife of actor Akshay Kumar and his younger daughter Rinke Khanna. He received many awards and recognitions, the most recent of which was the Padma Bhushan Award, and an honorary postage stamp bearing his picture was printed by the India Post. Among his credits are Bawarchi, Kudrat, and Anand. He died on July 18, 2012.
