American actress born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on 6 March 1916. She took dance and singing lessons at the Ernest Belcher Academy in Hollywood, and signed a contract with RKO at 14 years old, but they added two years to her age to be able to perform romantic scenes. She began her career doing voice roles in short cartoons in 1930, She made her feature film debut on Laugh and Get Rich (1931), her first main role on Fanny Foley Herself (1931), her first starring role on Beyond the Rockies (1932), and her first major work was Wild Boys of the Road (1933). Other notable works of hers include Imitation of Life (1934), Born Reckless (1937), The Officer and the Lady (1941), and Rebel without A Cause (1955). She married four times. She died of a heart attack and pneumonia on 17 January 1972 in Palm Desert, California.
