A prolific American film and stage actor, born in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (AADA) in 1922. He appeared for the first time on Broadway in 1924, and in cinema, he specialized in crime films and villainous roles. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. He's known for Murder by Television (1935), Marie Antoinette (1938) and High Sierra (1941). He died of Alzheimer's disease in Carpinteria, California, USA, on August 19, 1984, at age 80.
