An American actor born in the Bronx, on December 23, 1911. He was married to Ann Miltner (1944-2002) and their marriage lasted 58 years. He gave up his career as a stockbroker, in order to work as an actor, and began working in Broadway theatre. He made his first movie in 1948. He specialized in the roles of policemen, or the roles of resolute businessmen.His major works include: The Ambushers (1967), Barney Miller (1982-1975), Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) and The Manchurian Candidate (1962). He died in Arizona, on September 16, 2002.
