He is a Japanese writer, lyricist, game designer, and actor. He was born on November 10, 1948, in Maebashi, Gunma, Japan. He is the editor-in-chief of his website and company, Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun. Outside of Japan, he is best known for his work on Nintendo's Mother, also known as the "EarthBound" game series. He and author Haruki Murakami worked on the 1981 short story collection Yume de Aimashou (Let's meet in a dream). He made his acting debut in the 2010 movie adaptation of Haruki Murakami's novel Norwegian Wood, in which he played the role of a professor.
