An American actor born in San Jose, California. He began his career by working briefly at a vaudeville theater then joining a theater company in 1911. Six years later, he began working at Broadway. When silent films emerged, he became box office star and starred in over 47 films. His first talking film was In Old Arizona (1928). His notable works include Don't Bet on Women (1931), Chandu the Magician (1932), Hot Pepper (1933), and The Garden Murder Case (1936). He married 3 times and did not have children. He died of lung cancer on 21 April 1971 in Los Angeles, California.
