An American actor, born in Mount Vernon, New York, the United States. He studied at Dartmouth College and graduated with a degree in English. He worked in a bank, but he went bankrupt during the Great Depression, so he worked as a pilot for a company that also went bankrupt. He was forced to go to Hollywood as he previously appeared in the movie The Quarterback (1926) in the role of a football player. He quickly got other roles and appeared in the movie Animal Crackers (1930). He turned to theatrical work after his starring roles receded. He also worked as a real estate broker in addition to acting, which he finished with the movie Dirtymouth (1970), then he reappeared again sixteen years later in the movie Raiders of the Living Dead (1986). He died of cancer on October 9, 1998.
