At the age of seventeen, during her senior year of high school, she was approached to participate in the Miss Puerto Rico pageant as a representative of her hometown. She subsequently became Miss Universe and then a UNICEF ambassador, traveling throughout Asia and Latin America to support the organization. She created the Dayanara Torres Foundation, which provided scholarships to poor students in Puerto Rico and the Philippines. In 1994, she went to Manila to crown the new Miss Universe. During the ceremony, she sang A Whole New World with Peabo Bryson.
