Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz was a Cuban revolutionary and politician. He was the leader of Cuba from 1959 to 2008 after he overthrew the government of Fulgencio Batista. He became the Prime Minister until 2008. He announced that he would not run for a new term and elected his brother Raul Castro in his place. In 1965, Castro was the Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba who led the country's transformation into a communist regime and a one-party system of government. And in 1976, he became the head of the State Council and the Council of Ministers. He was the highest military commander. After intestinal surgery on July 31, 2006, he handed over his duties to his little brother and first vice president, Raul Castro. On February 19, 2008, 5 days before the end of his term of office, he announced that he did not wish to serve a new term as president or Chief of Staff. He passed away on November 25, 2016, at the age of 90. He appeared as himself in the American documentary The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara (2003).
