A physicist and researcher at NASA, she was born in Decatur, Alabama, in the United States. Jemison became the first woman of African descent to reach space when she worked as an astronaut in the Space Shuttle Endeavor program. Following her graduation from medical school, Jemison served in the Peace Corps from 1983 to 1985. From 1983 to 1985, Jemison served in the Peace Corps. In 1987, NASA accepted her application to become an astronaut, and on September 12, 1992, she assumed responsibility for one of the missions aboard the STS-47 spacecraft. In 1993, she resigned from NASA and founded a company to research the possibilities of applying technology to everyday life. She appeared on television several times, including acting in an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation. She received nine honorary doctorates in science, engineering, and humanities. Jemison also served as director of the 100 Year Starship organization.
