He then attended The Basic School at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, and completed naval flying officer training at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida in 1972. In 1981, he graduated from the United States Naval Test Pilot School. Before he was selected as an astronaut candidate, he was serving as Assistant Operations Officer for Marine Aircraft Group 12 at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. He appeared as himself in Space Station 3D (2002).
