An Australian actress, born in Melbourne, Australia. She began her theater career in Melbourne but moved to England at the age of 21 and quickly starred in comedy roles. Her film appearances were sporadic although she made several memorable productions, notably The Ruling Class...Read more (1972) as the voluptuous Lady Claire. While touring the Soviet Union in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Hamlet, Browne met expatriate British spy Guy Burgess, and this strange meeting became the basis for the television film An Englishman Abroad (1983), for which Browne won a BAFTA Award as Best Actress. Her most important works include Theater of Blood (1973) and Dreamchild (1985).
