An American actress, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Vance grew up in Chicago's South Side, graduating from Thornton Village High School in 1972. She later attended the National College of Education before transferring to Roosevelt University in 1975, where she studied playwriting and acting, graduating with honors. She then moved to London to study at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art, where she received training in acting Shakespearean texts and earned a Master of Arts degree. She is the first African-American cast member on SNL, achieving this in 1975. Her artistic works include Miami Vice (1984), The War of the Roses (1989), and Jumpin' at the Boneyard (1991).
