A German actor born September 6, 1879 in Berlin, Germany. His mother gave him money, which he secretly used for acting lessons, although he did not go to drama school until after his father's death. After graduating, he traveled briefly across the country with poet and playwright Demetrius Schrutz and worked in apprenticeship until his father's death before attending acting school. He toured the country with his peers and was a member of several theaters until he became part of Max Reinhardt's group of innovative German actors. His real career was in the German theater. He was married to Fanny Schreck. He is best known for his role as the vampire Count Orlok in Nosferatu (1922). He died on February 20, 1936, of a heart attack.
