A German-Austrian actor born on April 18, 1893 in Werbowitz, Galicia, Austria-Hungary. He was one of a dozen children of a poor Jewish family, who first worked in farming and then baking. He fled to Berlin in 1909, where he worked as a journeyman baker, joining a group of Jewish socialist worker-intellectuals. He got his start as an actor in amateur Yiddish-speaking productions, but he was encouraged to learn German and was accepted into the acting school of Max Reinhardt. He emigrated to the United States in 1938. He's known for Nosferatu (1922), Ninotchka (1939) and The Hitler Gang (1944). He died on March 14, 1945 in New York, USA.
