An American composer and music theorist, born in Los Angeles, California, United States. He is considered a pioneer of the unconventional use of musical instruments and was one of the leading figures in the post-war avant-garde. Critics have praised him as one of the most influential American composers of the twentieth century. He was also instrumental in the development of modern dance, through his collaboration with choreographer Merce Cunningham. Some of his credits are The Velvet Underground (2021) and Cunningham (2019). He died on August 12, 1992.
