A British actress, born in London, England, on December 27, 1901, and died on November 29, 1987, in London, of breast cancer. Her most notable work includes: Call Me Genius (1961), The Italian Job (1969), and The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970). She made her first appearance on the London stage in 1937, at the age of 36. Her film debut was in Missing Believed Married (1937). In five decades, she participated in more than a hundred British films, playing supporting roles, most notably in the film George and Margaret (1940). She enjoyed a prolific career on radio as well as on television and wrote three novels that became bestsellers. Her last film was Absolute Beginners (1986), and her last appearance on TV was in the series The Management (1988), which aired after her death in 1987, at the age of 86.
