An Indian film actress, who worked in Bengali and Hindi cinema. She was born in Pabna, British India (now Bangladesh). She began her career in the 1950s and was known for her roles in Bollywood films, most notably Saptapadi (1961), Aandhi (1975), Grihadaha (1967), Devdas (1955), and Bipasha (1962). She was the first Indian actress to win an award at an international film festival, winning the Best Actress award for Saptapadi at the Moscow Film Festival in 1963. Pranoy Pasha (1978) was her last film, and although she was considered one of the most prominent stars of Indian cinema, she chose to remain isolated after retiring from acting. She died on 17 January 2014, in Calcutta, India, at the age of 82.
