In 1954, she published her best-known work, "The Eagle of the Ninth", part of a series about Roman Britain and its aftermath. She won the Carnegie Medal for her third book in the Eagle series, "The Lantern Bearers" (1959). She was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to children's literature, and then Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1992. She's known for The Eagle (2011) and Sword of the Valiant (1984). She died on 23 July 1992 in Chichester, UK.
