He was an Australian writer and novelist. He studied at the University of Queensland, Australia, and his work has been published in the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. It has also been translated into many different languages. He is best known for winning the 2001 Miles Franklin Literary Prize for his novel, Dark Palace. His writing credits include The Coca-Cola Kid (1985) and The Everlasting Secret Family (1988). He died on June 26, 2022, in Sydney, Australia.
