A British actor, born on April 4, 1928, in Dennistoun, Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom, as James Allan Short. His works include The Wild Affair (1965), Carry On Abroad (1972), and Carry On Girls (1973). He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1996 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his "services to Scottish theatre". He received an honorary doctorate from Glasgow Caledonian University in 1994. Also, in 1998, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He died on April 13, 2001, in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, United Kingdom.
