He was married twice and had four children. He was nominated for the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor in 1975, 73 and 71. Among his notable works are Nicholas and Alexandra 1971, A Night to Remember (1958), and Goodbye Mr. Chips (1969). He died of cancer on April 25, 2002 in Richmond, London, England.
