An American actress, writer, and producer, born in Glens Falls, New York. She grew up in Long Island, USA, with her older brother and two half-sisters. At the end of her first year in high school, she moved to Svolvær, Norway, after receiving a scholarship for international exchange between students. She studied at Queen's University, in Ontario, Canada, and then moved to Oxford, England, after she received a Rotary International Scholarship, where the actor Alan Rickman, whom she met at a party, encouraged her to audition at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She was accepted in 1975 and pursued her career.
