She attended John Marshall Harlan Community Academy High School, where she participated in modern dance, the student council, and the drama club. After graduating from high school in 1969, she attended New York University, majoring in drama. She has won an award from the Writers Guild of America. She is known for Sally Hemings: An American Scandal (2000), Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis (2000) and Why Do Fools Fall in Love (1998).
