A British actor born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, UK. He made his stage debut in 1927 in London. He made his silent film debut on Chick (1928). In the late 1920s, he sailed to the US with Lawrence Olivier and remained there for the rest of his life. He made his Broadway debut in 1929. He made his film debut on So This Is London (1930). He also appeared on Svengali (1931) and The Mummy (1932). In 1934, he retired from working in film in favor of theater and TV. He appeared as Bernard Shaw in a play about his life in 1964, and played Henry Higgins on My Fair Lady on Broadway for years. He married four women and had 3 children. He died on 22 June 1988 in New Hampshire, USA.
