An American actor, born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA, on August 19, 1913, as Richard W. Simmons. He married twice and had four children. His most notable works include Sergeant Preston of the Yukon (1955-1958), A Million to One (1936), Death Valley Days (1965-1969), and On an...Read more Island with You (1948). Simmons graduated from West High School and attended the University of Minnesota, where he practiced fencing and swimming and performed in some theatrical productions. After graduation, he left the United States during the thirties and spent several years traveling around the world and working on cargo ships and tankers, and eventually settled in Los Angeles, where he was offered a screen test, and played a number of roles in MGM films, making his film debut in A Million to One (1936). He continued to work until he achieved fame in the mid-fifties. He worked on television in addition to his work in the cinema until he made his final screen appearance in 1971. He died of Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 89 in Oceanside, California, USA, on January 11, 2003.
