An American actor, screenwriter, director, singer, and composer, born in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. He was the first African American to appear in a leading role in the 1929 film Hearts in Dixie. He played the roles of butlers, farmers, cooks, slaves, drivers and...Read more singers. He studied at Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle in 1908 and later received an honorary doctorate in laws from the same school in 1978. He worked in the theater in Harlem before moving to Hollywood in 1929, and for 50 years he worked in minor and major roles. He appeared as an opera singer, minstrel show performer, vaudeville and Broadway actor; he also wrote songs, plays, and sketches. In 1943, he became the first African-American Broadway director. He was married three times and had three children. Among his notable credits are The Black Stallion (1979), Shadow of a Doubt (1943) and Broken Strings (1940). He died of cerebral hemorrhage in Perris, California, USA, at age 89.
