American actor and director, born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on July 10, 1892. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960 for his film career. He began his career in silent films at age 19. Summerville was married twice and had one child. He's known for Captain January (1936), All Quiet on the Western Front (1930), Horse Play (1933) and Charlie Chan in Reno (1939). He also directed 67 short films between 1920-1930. He died of a stroke on January 6, 1946, at the age of 53, leaving behind a rich legacy, enough to be remembered as one of the distinguished comedians on screen.
