She began her musical career with small roles in 1915 and appeared in 11 silent films up till 1920, then decided to focus on theater until talking films emerged. She appeared in The Plaything (1929) and signed a deal with MGM in 1932. She travelled to Hollywood in 1937 and made her Hollywood film debut in Mama Steps Out (1937). Other notable works of hers include Beau Geste (1939), Gaslight (1944) and Anna Karenina (1948). She died on January 15, 1987 in London, UK.
