American actress, born as Edna Cecil Cunningham in St. Louis, Missouri, on August 2, 1888. Cecil was married to the writer and actor Jean C. Havez and they divorced. She worked as a vaudeville comedienne at the Palace in New York before she began her film career in 1929. She's known for The Awful Truth (1937), Daughter of Shanghai (1937) and Playboy of Paris (1930). She appeared in four Oscar Best Picture nominees, including Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), and Kitty Foyle (1940). Cecil died in 1959 of atherosclerosis, at age 70.
